Maori Jade Carvings

The ocean has always been the dominant force for the Maori people who traveled huge distances in their long canoes and lived on the bounty of the tropical waters. They had a great respect for the creatures on the sea and in particular dolphins and whales.

Greenstone is a term specific to New Zealand to describe Jade. There are two types of Jade, jadeite and nephrite. Nephrite is the only type to occur in New Zealand. Jade comes in a variety of colors, green being the most valued. Jade / Greenstone is a hard and tough stone. It has been illegal to export raw jade / greenstone from New Zealand since 1947 due to it's limited supply.

Paua Shell Wonderful Traditional Maori Jewelry

The beautiful Paua shell... It is a species of abalone (Haliotis iris). Found only in the seas around New Zealand, this marine mollusk eats seaweed and clings to rocks at depths of 1-10 meters, along the shoreline. Paua shell is the most colorful of all the abalone shells. Others pale in comparison. Colors vary from greens and pinks to purples and blues. Some even have gold or crimson toning. The colors change when viewed from different angles, with an iridescence similar to that of Mother of Pearl shell, but far more brilliantly colored.
The name Paua is the name given to this shell by Maori.
